Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

  This Monday the Church will be celebrating the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple or Candlemas. The event is described in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2:22–40). According to the gospel, Mary and Joseph took the Infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem forty days (inclusive) after his birth to complete Mary's ritual purification after childbirth, and to perform the redemption of the firstborn son, in obedience to the Torah (Leviticus 12, Exodus 13:12–15, etc.). Luke explicitly says that Joseph and Mary take the option provided for poor people (those who could not afford a lamb) (Leviticus 12:8), sacrificing "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons." Due to the fact that Leviticus 12:1–4 indicates that this event should take place forty days after the birth of a male child, the Presentation is celebrated forty days after Christmas.

   Upon taking Jesus into the temple, they encountered Simeon. The Gospel records that Simeon had been promised that "he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ" (Luke 2:26). Simeon then uttered the prayer that would become known as the Nunc Dimittis, or Canticle of Simeon, which prophesied the redemption of the world by Jesus:

Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my Eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel (Luke 2:29-32).

   Simeon then prophesied to Mary: "Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed" (Luke 2:34–35).

   The elderly prophetess Anna was also in the Temple, and offered prayers and praise to God for Jesus, and spoke to everyone there of His importance to redemption in Jerusalem (Luke 2:36–38).

¡Saludos en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo!      Este Lunes, la Iglesia celebrará la Presentación del Señor en el Templo, también conocida como día de la Candelaria. Este acontecimiento se describe en el Evangelio de Lucas (Lucas 2:22-40). De acuerdo con el evangelio, María y José llevaron al Niño Jesús al Templo en Jerusalén cuarenta días después de su nacimiento para cumplir con la el ritual de purificación de María después del parto y para realizar la redención del primogénito, en obediencia a la Torá (Levítico 12, Éxodo 13:12-15, etc.). Lucas menciona explícitamente que José y María optaron por la ofrenda permitida para los pobres (aquellos que no disponían de recursos suficientes para adquirir un cordero) (Levítico 12:8), sacrificando «un par de tórtolas o dos pichones». Dado que Levítico 12:1-4 indica que este evento debía tener lugar cuarenta días después del nacimiento de un varón, la Presentación se celebra cuarenta días después de Navidad.

   Al llevar a Jesús al templo, se encontraron con Simeón. El Evangelio relata que a Simeón se le había prometido que no moriría sin haber visto antes al Mesías del Señor. (Lucas 2:26). Entonces Simeón pronunció la oración que se conocería como el Nunc Dimittis, o Cántico de Simeón, que profetizaba la redención del mundo por medio de Jesús:

“Señor, ya puedes dejar morir en paz a tu siervo, según lo que me habías prometido, porque mis ojos han visto a tu Salvador, al que has preparado para bien de todos los pueblos; luz que alumbra a las naciones y gloria de tu pueblo, Israel”. (Lucas 2:29-32).

  Entonces Simeón profetizó a María: "Este Niño ha sido puesto para caída y levantamiento de muchos en Israel, y para ser señal de contradicción. Y una espada traspasará aun tu propia alma, a fin de que sean revelados los pensamientos de muchos corazones.» (Lucas 2:34-35).

  La anciana profetisa Ana también estaba en el Templo, y ofreció oraciones y alabanzas a Dios por Jesús, y habló a todos los presentes sobre Su importancia para la redención en Jerusalén (Lucas 2:36-38).

  Para conmemorar este acontecimiento, celebraré las siguientes Misas:
