Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! This is the weekend of our Catholic Charities’ Annual Appeal. We are grateful for all the good that this apostolate has offered to the less fortunate throughout the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. On behalf of Archbishop Coakley, I thank you for your financial generosity!

    This is also the celebration of Catechetical Sunday, which was inspired by the Vatican document Provido Sane Consilio (On the Better Care and Promotion of Catechetical Education) published in 1935. This document asked every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church’s teaching apostolate, and to honor those who serve the Christian community as Catechists.

    In the United States, Catechetical Sunday was first observed with national Catechetical Congresses held in conjunction with the Vatican celebration. Beginning in 1971, the USCCB’s Department of Education began producing materials to help parishes celebrate the event at the local level. When the Committee on Catechesis, now named the Committee of Evangelization and Catechesis, was named by the Conference as a standing Committee, it continued to publish Catechetical Sunday materials each year.

    Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

    The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated the third Sunday in September as Catechetical Sunday, and we pray for our Catechists, so that they remain committed to teaching our children and youth about the beautiful TRUTHS of our Catholic faith.

    Are the Catechists the primary teachers of our children and youth enrolled in our Catechism Classes? No, since in reality, their parents are the primary educators of their children in the ways of faith as a result of their commitment made during the Rite of Baptism. Our Religious Education Catechists are here to supplement that spiritual formation which our RE children are receiving at home. Let us remember what Deuteronomy 6:4-9 states:

Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

    It is my hope and prayer that our Parents and Catechists will work together for the salvation of souls. May we make this the very best Catechetical Year yet!

¡Saludos en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo! Este es el fin de semana de la Campaña Anual de Caridades Católicas. Estamos agradecidos por todo el bien que este apostolado ha ofrecido a los más necesitados en toda la Arquidiócesis de Oklahoma City. ¡En nombre del Arzobispo Coakley, les agradezco por su generosidad financiera! 
      Este también es el día de celebración del Domingo Catequético, que se inspiró en el documento del Vaticano *Provido Sane Consilio* (Sobre el Mejor Cuidado y Promoción de la Educación Catequética) publicado en 1935. Este documento pidió a cada país reconocer la importancia del apostolado de enseñanza de la Iglesia y honrar a quienes sirven a la comunidad cristiana como catequistas.
     En Estados Unidos, el Domingo Catequético se observó por primera vez con Congresos Catequéticos nacionales realizados junto con la celebración del Vaticano. A partir de 1971, el Departamento de Educación de la USCCB comenzó a producir materiales para ayudar a las parroquias a celebrar el evento a nivel local. Cuando el Comité de Catequesis, ahora llamado Comité de Evangelización y Catequesis, fue nombrado por la Conferencia como un Comité permanente, continuó publicando materiales para el Domingo Catequético cada año.
     El Domingo Catequético es una maravillosa oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el papel que cada persona desempeña, en virtud del Bautismo, en transmitir la fe y ser testigo del Evangelio. El Domingo Catequético es una oportunidad para que todos nos re-dediquemos a esta misión como comunidad de fe.
     La Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos ha designado el tercer domingo de septiembre como el Domingo Catequético, y rezamos por nuestros catequistas, para que se mantengan comprometidos a enseñar a nuestros niños y jóvenes sobre las hermosas VERDADES de nuestra fe católica.
     ¿Son los catequistas los maestros principales de nuestros niños y jóvenes inscritos en nuestras Clases de Catecismo? No, ya que en realidad, sus padres son los educadores principales de sus hijos en los caminos de la fe como resultado del compromiso que hicieron durante el Rito del Bautismo. Nuestros catequistas de Educación Religiosa están aquí para complementar esa formación espiritual que nuestros niños de RE están recibiendo en casa. Recordemos lo que dice Deuteronomio 6:4-9:
¡Escucha, oh Israel! ¡El SEÑOR es nuestro Dios, el SEÑOR es uno solo! Amarás al SEÑOR tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con todas tus fuerzas. Estas palabras, que te mando hoy, estarán en tu corazón. Las enseñarás diligentemente a tus hijos y hablarás de ellas cuando te sientes en tu casa, cuando camines por el camino, cuando te acuestes y cuando te levantes. Las atarás como una señal en tu mano y serán como frontales en tu frente. Las escribirás en los postes de tu casa y en tus puertas. 
      Es mi esperanza y oración que nuestros Padres y Catequistas trabajen juntos por la salvación de las almas. ¡Que hagamos de este el mejor Año Catequético hasta ahora!
