Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

   There are many traditions that we have in our beautiful Roman Catholic Church, and the Presentation of our Lord Jesus is one of them.

   The Law of Moses stipulated that forty days after a child’s birth, the child should be presented at the Temple. Therefore, on February 2nd, forty days after Christmas, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord—also known as Candlemas and the Purification of the Virgin Mary. This celebration is rooted in Luke 2:22–38, which recounts Mary and Joseph bringing the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem forty days after His birth, fulfilling the Mosaic Law for purification and consecration. There, they meet the devout Simeon and Anna, who recognize Him as the long-promised Messiah, the Light of the Nations.

  At this feast, Christ is proclaimed the Light of the nations, which is why the blessing and procession of candles take place. Many Hispanic Catholics also maintain the tradition of bringing images of the Baby Jesus to the church, recalling the gesture of Joseph and Mary when they presented him in the temple.

  In Mexico, this devotion is celebrated in a special way with the "lifting" of the Baby Jesus, which consists of removing him from the manger, dressing him in a special outfit, and placing him in his little chair, where he will remain until the next Christmas. The Baby Jesus is "put to bed" on December 24th and "lifted up" on February 2nd.

   For this celebration, a godfather or godmother is chosen, who is responsible for the baby Jesus's outfit and the sweets. On the day of the "lifting of the baby Jesus," the Holy Rosary is recited, the baby Jesus is dressed, and then presented to those present, who venerate him with a kiss and share a moment of fellowship.

   Many families also bring their Baby Jesus figurines to the church to present them during Holy Mass, where they are blessed at the end of the Mass, so that they may return to their homes as a sign of blessing, grace, and protection.

   In honor of this tradition, we will have a special ceremony after the January 31st and February 1st Masses by venerating the Child Jesus. Please come one, come all.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

   En nuestra hermosa Iglesia Católica Romana tenemos muchas tradiciones, y la Presentación de nuestro Señor Jesús es una de ellas.

   La Ley de Moisés estipulaba que cuarenta días después del nacimiento de un niño, este debía ser presentado en el Templo. Por lo tanto, el 2 de Febrero, cuarenta días después de Navidad, la Iglesia celebra la Fiesta de la Presentación del Señor, también conocida como la Candelaria y la Purificación de la Virgen María. Esta celebración tiene sus raíces en Lucas 2:22-38, que narra cómo María y José llevaron al Niño Jesús al Templo de Jerusalén cuarenta días después de su nacimiento, cumpliendo así la Ley Mosaica de purificación y consagración. Allí se encuentran con los devotos Simeón y Ana, quienes lo reconocen como el Mesías prometido, la Luz de las naciones.

   En esta fiesta, Cristo es proclamado la Luz de las naciones, por lo que se realiza la bendición y la procesión de las velas. Muchos católicos hispanos también mantienen la tradición de llevar imágenes del Niño Jesús a la iglesia, recordando el gesto de José y María cuando lo presentaron en el templo.

   En México, esta devoción se celebra de una manera especial con el "levantamiento" del Niño Jesús, que consiste en sacarlo del pesebre, vestirlo con un atuendo especial y colocarlo en su sillita, donde permanecerá hasta la siguiente Navidad. El Niño Jesús se "acuesta" el 24 de Diciembre y se "levanta" el 2 de Febrero.

   Para esta celebración, se elige un padrino o una madrina, quien se encarga del atuendo del Niño Jesús y de los dulces. El día del "levantamiento del Niño Jesús", se reza el Santo Rosario, se viste al Niño Jesús y luego se presenta a los presentes, quienes lo veneran con un beso y comparten un momento de convivencia.      Muchas familias también llevan sus imágenes de sus Niños Dios a la iglesia para presentarlas durante la Santa Misa, donde son bendecidas al final de la celebración, para que regresen a sus hogares como signo de bendición, gracia y protección.

   En honor a esta tradición, tendremos una ceremonia especial después de las Misas del 31 de Enero y del 1 de Febrero para venerar al Niño Jesús. ¡Todos están cordialmente invitados!
