 Affability

Affability, Explained!

There was a certain sister in the Carmelite convent who particularly tried the patience of St. Therese of Lisieux.

But instead of avoiding this person, St. Therese instead made a point of smiling at her whenever the two met.

“Charity must not consist in feelings, but in works,” wrote St. Therese. “I set myself to doing for this Sister what I would do for the person I loved the most.” In doing so, she learned to see “Jesus hidden in the depths” of this woman’s soul.

St. Therese was growing in the virtue of affability when she did this. Affability is attached to justice, writes St. Thomas Aquinas, and demands “that we behave pleasantly to those among whom we dwell.” (Sum., II:II, 114, Art. 2)

In being affable, we make ourselves friendly, approachable, and agreeable to those around us, regardless of how they make us feel. “How good and how pleasant it is when brothers dwell together as one,” writes King David in Psalm 133.

“Lo que te digo en la oscuridad, háblalo en la luz.” Todos escuchamos la voz de Dios susurrando en nuestro corazón. El discipulado significa decir esas palabras en voz alta. Todos sentimos el Espíritu cantar en nuestras almas. El discipulado significa bailar al ritmo de la melodía.

Afabilidad

¡Afabilidad, Explicada!

Había una cierta hermana en el convento carmelita que puso a prueba especialmente la paciencia de Santa Teresa de Lisieux.

Pero en lugar de evitar a esa persona, Santa Teresa se esforzaba en sonreírle cada vez que se encontraban.

"La caridad no debe consistir en sentimientos, sino en obras", escribió Santa Teresa. "Me propuse hacer por esta Hermana lo que haría por la persona que más amaba." Al hacerlo, aprendió a ver a "Jesús escondido en las profundidades" del alma de esta mujer.

Santa Teresa estaba creciendo en la virtud de la afabilidad cuando hizo esto. La afabilidad está ligada a la justicia, escribe Santo Tomás de Aquino, y exige "que nos comportemos amablemente con aquellos entre quienes habitamos." (Sum., II:II, 114, Art. 2)

Al ser afables, nos hacemos amables, accesibles y agradables con quienes nos rodean, independientemente de cómo nos hagan sentir. "Qué bueno y qué agradable es cuando los hermanos habitan juntos como uno solo", escribe el rey David en el Salmo 133.
