Corpus Christi Prayer

O Precious Jesus,
The gift of your Body and Blood, shared with us, is unfathomable.

Like manna that satiated our hunger, fill us where we lack.

Like the bread given to Elijah in the desert, sustain us.

Grace us with a glimpse into your love for us,

now and forever, present in the Eucharist.
Amen.

Question:

Why do we celebrate the Hearts of Jesus in the month of June?

Answer:

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an ancient practice. We can see its Scriptural origins in Jesus’ own references to His Heart. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest … for I am meek and humble of heart” (c.f. Matthew 11:28, 29).

The devotion received a surge of popularity in the late 1600s. Jesus appeared several times to a French religious sister, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, pointing to his heart. During this time, the Jansenist heresy had risen in France, which preached limited predestination for salvation. When appearing to Margaret Mary, Jesus affirmed his love for all mankind: “Behold the Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing.” He asked for a special feast celebrating his Sacred Heart on the Friday following the feast of Corpus Christi. Over time, June has become known as the month of Sacred Heart.

Oh, precioso Jesús,

El don de tu Cuerpo y Sangre, compartido con nosotros, es insondable.

Como maná que saciaba nuestra hambre, llénanos donde nos falta.

Como el pan dado a Elías en el desierto, sostennos.

Agrácianos con un vistazo de tu amor por nosotros,

¿Por qué celebramos los Corazones de Jesús en el mes de junio?

Respuesta:

La devoción al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús es una práctica antigua. Podemos ver sus orígenes bíblicos en las propias referencias de Jesús a Su Corazón. "Venid a mí todos los que estáis fatigados y agobiados, y yo os haré descansar... porque soy manso y humilde de corazón" (cf. Mateo 11:28, 29).

La devoción recibió una oleada de popularidad a fines del siglo XVII. Jesús se apareció varias veces a una hermana religiosa francesa, Santa Margarita María Alacoque, señalando su corazón. Durante este tiempo, la herejía jansenista había surgido en Francia, que predicaba una predestinación limitada para la salvación. Al aparecerse a Margarita María, Jesús afirmó su amor por toda la humanidad: "He aquí el Corazón que tanto ha amado a los hombres que no ha escatimado nada". Pidió una fiesta especial para celebrar su Sagrado Corazón el viernes siguiente a la fiesta de Corpus Christi. Con el tiempo, junio se ha conocido como el mes del Sagrado Corazón.
