Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! We are blessed to have begun another Liturgical Season of Lent!

    We commenced the Lenten Season with Ash Wednesday this last Wednesday, February 18th, and the official Lenten Season will end before the Holy Thursday Mass. What is the purpose of Lent? It is a time in which we recall the Old Testament’s and New Testament’s use of prayer, almsgiving, fasting and abstinence. With regard to the number 40, we recall the 40 days and nights of rain during the days of Noah. We remember Israel’s sojourn through the desert for 40 years. In a more profound and Christocentric manner, we call to mind Jesus’ 40 day walk through the desert while being tempted by Satan before Jesus began His Salvific Mission.

      In order to commemorate the aforementioned information into one liturgical Season, the Church inaugurates the threshold of the Springtime of Evangelization with ashes placed on the believer’s forehead through the Sign of the Cross. This harkens back to the prophets of old that preached destruction and pestilence IF the Israelites did not repent and change their ways.

       For this reason, we heard one of the following scriptural passages during the imposition of ashes:

       Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return (Genesis 3:19), or Repent, and believe the Gospel (Mark 1:15).

      From the Aforementioned reasons why we use ashes, the Roman Catholic Church has accentuated the NEED for the following to be present in our daily lives throughout LENT:

         PRAYER: Prayer orients us like a compass to our TRUE NORTH, JESUS CHRIST.

Night Prayer: I cordially invite you to pray Night Prayer every night at 8:00 p.m. in English and 8:15 p.m. in Spanish in the Chapel or Saint Patrick’s Facebook, which began on Thursday after Ash Wednesday, and will end on Monday of Holy Week;

Stations of the Cross: More about this down below;

       FASTING: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 (whose health enables them to do so) are permitted to consume only one full meal, which may be supplemented by two smaller meals, which together should not equal the full meal. Some Catholics will go beyond the minimum obligations demanded by the Church and undertake a complete fast or a bread and water fast (Code of Canon Law numbers 1249-1253);

       ABSTINENCE: Ash Wednesday and every Friday during Lent are also days of abstinence from meat (mammals and fowl), (Code of Canon Law numbers 1249-1253). Why is it necessary to abstain from flesh meat on Ash Wednesday and All Fridays of the year? Because Jesus Christ’s Flesh was crucified on Good Friday, and therefore, we commemorate the sanctity/holiness of Jesus’ sacrifice by abstaining from all flesh meat food;

      ALMSGIVING & RICE BOWLS: Let us remember the poor at our door. Without the blessing of an income from a job, inheritance or retirement from the savings accrued over the years, where would we be?

     Way/Stations of the Cross (Viae Crucis exercitium) – According to the Enchiridion of Indulgences, no. 63: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful, who make the pious exercise of the Way of the Cross. In the pious exercise of the Way of the Cross, we recall anew the sufferings, which the divine Redeemer endured, while going from the praetorium of Pilate, where he was condemned to death, to the mount of Calvary, where he died on the cross for our salvation.

       Those who are "impeded" can gain the same indulgence, if they spend at least one half an hour in pious reading and meditation on the Passion and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

        In order to receive the plenary indulgence, one must also go to confession beforehand, and pray for the intentions of Pope Leo XIV.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: ¡Tenemos la bendición de haber comenzado otro Tiempo Litúrgico de Cuaresma!

     Comenzamos la Cuaresma con el Miércoles de Ceniza el pasado Miércoles 18 de Febrero, y la Cuaresma oficial finalizará antes de la Misa del Jueves Santo. ¿Cuál es el propósito de la Cuaresma? Es un tiempo en el que recordamos el uso de la oración, la limosna, el ayuno y la abstinencia en el Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento. Con respecto al número 40, recordamos los 40 días y noches de lluvia durante los días de Noé. Recordamos la peregrinación de Israel por el desierto durante 40 años. De una manera más profunda y Cristocéntrica, recordamos los 40 días que Jesús caminó por el desierto mientras era tentado por Satanás antes de comenzar su misión salvífica.

         Para conmemorar la información antes mencionada en un solo Tiempo Litúrgico, la Iglesia inaugura el umbral de la Primavera de la Evangelización con la ceniza colocada en la frente del creyente mediante la Señal de la Cruz. Esto evoca a los antiguos profetas que predicaron destrucción y pestilencia si los Israelitas no se arrepentían y cambiaban su conducta.

      Por esta razón, escuchamos uno de los siguientes pasajes bíblicos durante la imposición de la ceniza: Recuerda que eres polvo y al polvo volverás (Génesis 3:19), o Arrepiéntete y cree en el Evangelio (Marcos 1:15).

A partir de las razones mencionadas para usar la ceniza, la Iglesia Católica Romana ha enfatizado la NECESIDAD de que lo siguiente esté presente en nuestra vida diaria durante la CUARESMA:

ORACIÓN: La oración nos orienta como una brújula hacia nuestro VERDADERO NORTE, JESUCRISTO.

Oración de la Noche: Los invito cordialmente a rezar la Oración de la Noche todas las noches a las 8:00 p.m. en Inglés y a las 8:15 p.m. en Español en la Capilla o en el Facebook de San Patricio. Esta oración comenzó el Jueves después del Miércoles de Ceniza y finalizará el Lunes de Semana Santa.

AYUNO: El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo, los católicos de entre 18 y 59 años (cuya salud se lo permita) solo pueden consumir una comida completa, que puede complementarse con dos comidas más pequeñas, que en conjunto no deben ser equivalentes a la comida completa. Algunos católicos van más allá de las obligaciones mínimas exigidas por la Iglesia y realizan un ayuno completo o un ayuno de pan y agua (Código de Derecho Canónico, números 1249-1253);

ABSTINENCIA: El Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los Viernes de Cuaresma también son días de abstinencia de carne (mamíferos y aves) (De acuerdo al Código de Derecho Canónico, números 1249-1253).

¿Por qué es necesario abstenerse de carne el Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los viernes del año? Porque la carne de Jesucristo fue crucificada el Viernes Santo y, por lo tanto, conmemoramos la santidad del sacrificio de Jesús absteniéndonos de todo alimento carnívoro.

LIMOSNA Y EL PLATO DE ARROZ: Recordemos a los pobres que nos visitan. Sin la bendición de un ingreso laboral, una herencia o la jubilación gracias a los ahorros acumulados a lo largo de los años, ¿Dónde estaríamos?

Vía Crucis (Viae Crucis exercitium) – Según el Libro de Indulgencias, numero 63: Se concede indulgencia plenaria a los fieles que realizan el piadoso ejercicio del Vía Crucis. En este piadoso ejercicio, recordamos los sufrimientos que soportó el divino Redentor desde el pretorio de Pilato, donde fue condenado a muerte, hasta el monte del Calvario, donde murió en la cruz por nuestra salvación.

Quienes se encuentren impedidos pueden obtener la misma indulgencia si dedican al menos media hora a la lectura y meditación piadosa de la Pasión y Muerte de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Para recibir la indulgencia plenaria, es necesario confesarse previamente y rezar por las intenciones del Papa León XIV.
